Recorded in June, 1984, at Heavenshore Studio, Stockholm, Sweden.
Produced by Boss and Quorthon.
Album cover design by Quorthon.
The first pressing of the album was released with a different cover (Yellow Goat). Quorthon didn't like the yellow colour, so after about 1000 copies, he changed the colour from yellow to white. All original Black Mark pressings come with a lyric sheet insert.
The original title for this album was Pentagrammaton, but this title was discarded when several people read it as "Pentagon".
The cover image is a retouched portion of a drawing made by Joseph A. Smith in 1981 for the book Witches by Erica Jong.
On the reissue of the CD in 1990, ''Storm of Damnation'' and the outro aren't mentioned in the tracklist. The 2003 CD reissue combines "Storm of Damnation" and "Hades" into one track.
Regarding the spelling of Track 4: Sheets of Old English rub-on letters had already been purchased for rubbing the logo and the song titles. At some point during rubbing the song titles the night before turning the lay-out in for printing, it was discovered that they were one letter "c" short. Thinking nobody would ever notice anyway, and figuring a "s" sound though spelled with a "c" could easily be written with a "s" just as well, an "s" was duly used instead of a "c". Thus the title "Necromancy" became "Necromansy".
One of the pioneers of the first wave of black metal music (as well as viking metal).
Vvornth and Kothaar were names used by various members, filling in the role and taking the assigned name.
Quorthon died of a heart attack on June 3, 2004 in his appartment in Hässelby, Stockholm. Ace Börje Forsberg was the name written on Quorthon's obituary, but his real birth name was Tomas. If someone asked him the real name he always gave invented ones: Runka Snorkråka (Wanked snot(hodded)crow), Pär Vers (a wordplay, means perverted), Fjärt Bengrot (Fart Bengrot), Folke Ostkuksgrissla, Fnoret.
Rumours persist that Börje "Boss" Forsberg, the owner of Black Mark Productions, is Quorthon's father, but Quorthon himself denied these claims, stating "Boss is 52, I'm 37. Add that up yourself. All these rumours surrounding Bathory are crazy.", though Boss was in fact 59 at the time. It is also rumoured that Jennie Tebler is his sister.
When Quorthon formed the band in 1983, his nickname was originally Black Spade. He soon changed it to Ace Shoot, then finally to Quorthon, a name he found on a list of demons. Contrary to popular belief, Bathory had never released an official demo: the first recording was two songs for the Scandinavian Metal Attack compilation LP in 1984.
Bathory played only a few live shows (probably between 6 and 8) in the early days. Quorthon refused to play live ever since.
After The Return... Quorthon worked on an album to be called Okkulta with drummer S. Larsson, but this was scrapped in favor of writing Under the Sign of the Black Mark. All albums until Hammerheart had the same outro, then the outro was added also to the 2003 reissues.
Chris Witchhunter (ex-Sodom) jammed with Bathory for a few rehearsals, but never joined the band or played on any recording.
Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Bathory was a 17th century Hungarian noblewoman, who allegedly enjoyed bathing in young women's blood to keep herself young. Most estimates on the number of girls she killed are between 600/700.
Bathory participated also in the second chapter of Scandinavian Metal Attack.
