Pyrexia - Age Of The Wicked
Pyrexia’s "Age Of The Wicked"...
By: Stuka_Kommandant
Date: 19 Nov 2008

... contains ten brutal tracks which will appeal to all those who like furious death-grind to be compared with Deeds Of Flesh, Necrophagist and others. If not: keep away, because this putrid offal will regurgitate you...

Opeth - Watershed
Extreme prog at it's best
By: misanthrone
Date: 14 Nov 2008
Rating:

I don't know how to describe the album in just a few words.. Opeth surpassed my expectations on this one.. excellent balance between melody and aggression.."Heir Apparent" it's the heaviest track of their career!.. perfect combination of prog/death even some doomy touches.. The bonus track version of the album has some beautiful songs added, for the fans of "Damnation" album.. I cannot name a specific song I liked, I always listen to the whole album, fuckin' amazing.. best album of 2008 by far..

Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Bloodbath
By: Waffen
Date: 29 Oct 2008

Where do you start with this?

You know those stupid pop compilation cds that come out every year? The ones that disco dj's use at kid's parties? Without drawing too close a comparison, this album is the equivalent of one of those.

Wait! don't get angry. What I mean is that if you had a death metal party there would probably be one cd with the most number of moshtastic songs on it guaranteed to get everyone into the mosh pit....and this is it.

I'm not sure how they did it, but there is about a million riffs on this cd, about 99% of them neck breaking and massive. Right down the order, even though it tails off a bit towards the end, this album has great song structures. The production is excellent. From Peter Tagtren's brutal vocals to Dan Swano's cheese ridden over the top plucking you can't go wrong.

There won't be many who dislike this album, and the floor of the party venue afterwards will almost certainly be littered with jelly, ice cream, crisps and half the fuckin' buffet when 'Eaten' is played.

Not a classic but a good album. With Swano. without Swano, everyone's got an opinion, but regardless of that a fan's favourite.

Score: 4.5/5

Pest [SWE] - In Total Contempt
In Total Contempt
By: Waffen
Date: 29 Oct 2008
Rating:

This is Pest's best release to date. More consistent than 'Blashpemy is my Throne' and their EP 'Black Thorns.'

Its raw mid-paced Black Metal old skool style with stompy riffing and drumming although there are lots of fast sections too. Grumpy from start to finish expect no acoustics or nice bits. Just plain old nastyness and raspy guitars.

That usually means its boring but there is enough variation here to keep you interested. The singing grabs you straight away. Remember Darkthrone's Panzerfaust album? The vocals are reminiscent of that album: grim, raw, and agressive.

Its worth mentioning that the production is really decent too.

In Total Contempt is nothing new to black metal but it does what it does proficiently and is a good all round album. It is certainly a like it or hate it album and won't appeal to everyone's taste but that's good.

Score: 4/5

Disavowed - Perceptive Deception
Disavowed - Netherlands Finest
By: Stuka_Kommandant
Date: 23 Oct 2008
Rating:

"Perceptive Deception" is one of the best death metal albums ever, imo... Point!
This album is wrapped with overwhelming metal, a lot of super-catchy riffs here and there and utter brutality all along. The music presented is really technical and multifaceted (in the brutal kind of way of course), each breakdown is even stronger than the previous one, the riffs are catchy but violent, the bass-lines add great atmosphere towards the sound and the drum-beats explore beyond blast-beats.
The tunes are carried on with dual vocals which, by the way, are really intense and explosive; the deeper vocals steal the spotlight this time though.
DISAVOWED are really fucking brutal, so i'm sure some people won't understand it, mostly metal purists who think metal music should feature keyboards or a cello damn it; but if you do like metal the way it should be made then grab this album instantly, you won't be disappointed believe me.

Best tracks: "Rhizome", "Condensed Conditions", "Generative Patterns", "Opposite Extremities"

Pyaemia - Cerebral Cereal
Pyaemia - good old brutal death metal
By: Stuka_Kommandant
Date: 23 Oct 2008
Rating:

Pyaemia is a fine example of good old brutal death metal and i think these guys belong to the sickest and heaviest death metal bands ever to emerge from the Netherlands.
The songs are mostly midpaced and groovy, for as far as you can speak of groovy, because the brutal heavy shit almost overshadows the groove.
This is the ultimate slaughter music. A must have for extreme death metal fans.

Deicide - Deicide
No way
By: Waffen
Date: 4 Oct 2008
Rating:

I can't believe its been 18 years since this arrived in our cd players. 18 years!!!

Credited with introducing me to the darker side of music and steering me away from the comfort zone of thrash metal this is truly one of the all time classic death albums. From the very first time I heard it I was entranced. The severity, the speed, the evilness. It made me do things I wouldn't normally of done and got me into a whole load of trouble.

Blazing a trail of hate through the world of Christianity, what teenage kid would fail to be influenced by the lyrics and message of rebellion. Probably the most openly satanic album at that time, with more menace to it that Slayer, Hellhammer and venom and the wave of stuff before it.

All the songs are great but tail off a bit towards the end with the last 2 being under par compared to the rest. Dead by Dawn is obvioulsy my fave but they all have a place close to my heart even though I listen to them only once in a blue moon these days.

Its a shame that none of their subsequent releases have re-captured the spirit of this one. Regardless I think I speak for us all when I say thank you Deicide for a life changing and awesomely wicked piece of utter blasphemy.
