Gire - Gire
The huns strike back
By: misanthrone
Date: 17 Mar 2009
Rating:

This is an oddity here.. I mean, I’d never expect to see this on a death/black/grind radio station.. very avant-garde metal, although at times this doesn’t sound metal at all.. beautiful atmosphere, plus the use of their native language (Hungarian) adds to the charm even more.. hard to describe their stuff, cosmic/dreamy/dark/electro/avant-garde would be the first words that came to my mind.. very unique music, one of the very few bands that can be distinguished after only a few notes.. outstanding , majestic, 100% original..

Inquisition - Nefarious Dismal Orations
Oldschool shit
By: misanthrone
Date: 17 Mar 2009
Rating:

Holy molly what a mess.. this is trve old-school black thrashing metal from hell! Hailing from Colombia, they deliver here something truly great here.. the atmosphere is dark as fuck, this sounds like it has been recorded 20 years ago using today’s technology.. mid-paced but also very fast sometimes, fuels you up with lots of energy.. totally anti-commercial, music made with heart and passion.. the title song is the most impressive one..

Azaghal - Perkeleen Luoma
Occult black metal
By: misanthrone
Date: 17 Mar 2009
Rating:

One of the most representative band of the Finnish black metal scene.. Finland being the only northern country that isn’t Viking, their bands focus almost exclusively on Occultism/Satanism.. that’s the case with Azaghal here too.. this is my fave of theirs, most of the time fast, but also mid-paced black metal.. using their native language adds even more to the dark atmosphere.. the peculiar dark atmosphere is what distinguishes black metal made in Finland and Azaghal is maybe the best example.. best song: Perkeleen Kitaan.

Tiamat - Wildhoney
An erotic nightmare
By: misanthrone
Date: 9 Mar 2009
Rating:

yes, this sounds exactly like an erotic nightmare:).. when this came out the first reaction from me was: fuck! they went soft!.. indeed, soft, but after I've tried to dig it, a whole new universe opened in front of my eyes.. it was then when I've started to pay attention to less aggressive metal.. the music itself is almost impossible to describe.. some doom some goth some prog some death reminiscences, weird ambient/cosmic parts, all blended masterfully by these freaks.. and the lyrics, fuck they are weird.. just read those of "Whatever that hurts" and you'll understand.. overall, the most avant-garde/intuitive/genius album ever created by a metal band.. Best song: Gaia!

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
My kantele
By: misanthrone
Date: 5 Mar 2009
Rating:

The best melodic death metal album ever!.. at that time (1994) this was a real sensation.. Amorphis managed to break barriers, moving death metal into another dimension.. starting with the beautiful “Thousand lakes” (still my fave intro ever), continuing with the great “Into hiding” they display something very unique.. the atmosphere is amazing, in part because of the use of their traditional instrument, the “kantele”.. of course, the “hit” of this album is “My kantele”, where the use of the traditional instrument is more obvious.. I cannot point to a fave song, all of them are just incredible.. 15 years after, I still get a kick listening to this.. also, if you get the bonus version, you’ll hear a great cover for “Light my fire” by The Doors..
