Hieronymus Bosch - Human Abstract, The
Knotty
By: misanthrone
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

This was my personal discovery in 2008.. although the album was released much earlier it’s only recently that I’ve bumped into it..
This is technical/progressive death metal on its peak.. in the vein of Cynic but more aggressive.. beautiful passages cut by heavy guitars and harsh vocals.. everything seems well calculated, executed with astounding precision.. the cover looks awesome, truly in the vein of Hieronymus Bosch.. best track: “Thought Racism Forms”.

Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Freezing north
By: misanthrone
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

this was the 1st time Immortal tried to play something else.. and they did it in a fantastic way.. also for the 1st time you don’t see their faces on the cover:).. very mature, technical, speedy, with the same freezing atmosphere, but this time much more complex.. the longest tracks of their career, influences from heavy metal, excellent guitar work, drumming and vocals.. not even one single weak track which is rare.. black metal at it’s best..

Pestilence - Spheres
Almost but not quite
By: misanthrone
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

this is the oddity of Pestilence.. back then they tried to go on the path of Cynic and Atheist, with mixed results.. “Mind reflections” is an awesome song, if they could have kept it that way it would have been a masterpiece of an album.. that’s not the case unfortunately, the rest of the tracks sound too weird, weak, the jazzy influences are somehow out of place.. honestly the rest of the songs sound like filler, except for a few moments here and then..

Arch Enemy - Rise Of The Tyrant
Too bad
By: misanthrone
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

some bands just don’t know when to stop.. “Anthems of rebellion” was their latest good album, after that is was just predictable and boring.. and this one puts the tombstone on their grave.. completely dull, boring and uninteresting, too bad..

Satyricon - Age Of Nero, The
Unimpressive
By: misanthrone
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

Don’t know exactly how to review this.. if could only say one word that would be : Inconsistent.. their weakest album so far but they do have a few great songs, like “Commando” or “Black crow on a tombstone”.. Frosts’s drumming is great as always, he has a few amazing outburst on the aforementioned tracks.. overall is just too slow or in best case mid-tempo.. “My skin is cold” supposedly the hit of the albums is a piece of crap.. I wouldn’t call this album a disappointment since I didn’t expect much anyways.. decent and that’s it, which of course is not enough for such a famous band.

Altar - Ego Art
"Ego Art" or: to unleash a dog!
By: DanielHahn
Date: 19 Mar 2009
Rating:

man man,what a discharge of wrath Edwin Kelder ( Vocals) presents! only matchless , YES! ok for the comprehensive view: butal death thrash with very talented guitar player Marcel Verdurmen(ex-Mandator)who gives us a view over his skills(the song:"Tonight This Country Will Die" could be from Metallica )only to show the overall quality of this silverling

no restrictions ,and i give this album 5*

My Dying Bride - Angel And The Dark River, The
Sadness at it's best
By: misanthrone
Date: 18 Mar 2009
Rating:

My favorite My Dying Bride album, and MDB are also my fave band!.. this was the 1st opus where they gave up on angry vocals, Aaron prefers only his angelic ones on this.. weeping/chanting vocals, absolutely magnificent.. it is by far their saddest album, with extensive use of violin, very slow (except for “Your shameful heaven”) and funeral.. includes the video-hit “The cry of mankind”, by now their most famous one.. this was pretty much the last album of the old My Dying Bride, paving way for new influences in their music.. outstanding!

Misanthrope - Visionnaire
Gargantuan metal
By: misanthrone
Date: 18 Mar 2009
Rating:

Pioneers of French avant-garde metal.. after several albums and going through different styles, they introduce us to a metal mix: black, heavy, death, speed, some goth some medieval music, decadent/esoteric/gargantuan lyrics, all coming from the (sick) mind of Philipe Courtois de l’Argilliere.. let’s call this a metal salad, where:
Black=onion
Death=tomato
Goth=Feta cheese
Heavy=cucumber
Speed=olives
Medieval=spices
If you like salad you must enjoy this as well.. Philipe’s voice is great, recitative/low/desperate/screaming, you got it all.. very energetic music, excellent for bad moods.. best song: Irrévérencieux!
