Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
Arcane Rain Fell
By: Ebonfire
Date: 14 Nov 2010
Rating:

Arcane Rain Fell is the second release by the gothic/doom metal band Draconian. For this album Draconian have managed to achieve the perfect blend between the gothic and the doom elements of their music, with the doom being obviously prevalent, but with the gothic side still noticeable as well.

This album is a fantastic piece of depressive doom that manages to stay interesting and varied from beginning to end, where no two songs sound the same, and every song is memorable (which is always a good thing).

An excellent album without any filler; I highly recommend this to fans of atmospheric and/or doom metal. You won’t be disappointed.

October Tide - Thin Shell, A
slow to mid-paced doom/death October Tide...
By: urielms
Date: 13 Nov 2010
Rating:

A Thin Shell features 7 songs, one of which is an instrumental and clocks in at about 42 minutes. No intros, no outros, no filler, no bullshit. Just the way I like it. It would be an insult to say October Tide hasn't progressed both in song writing and musicianship, however they don't stray far from the sound that gained them the respect of the metal community. Norrman is the master of writing creepy catchy melodic dark somber riffs with dual harmonies and this album is no different. Every song has at least one moment where you catch yourself nodding your head and closing your eyes and rocking out involuntarily.

Insomnium - Across The Dark
Amazing Finnish Melo-Death
By: Nephilim
Date: 12 Nov 2010
Rating:

This album takes you on a roller coaster ride of awesome death metal. The intro is mellow and builds into the heavy hitting "Down with the Sun". The different dynamics in Niilo's vocals add different layers and texures to the album. To compliment his growls and add a different dimension, they've recruited Jules Naveri to do some clean vocals on a few tracks. Every track is different and keeps you wanting more. An excellent effort by these Finnish metallers.

Krypt - Preludes To Death
very good release
By: Tjepman666
Date: 29 Oct 2010
Rating:

Imagine a dark dank crypt from whence funeral rotting smells emit and a dry creaking wraith lives ready to destroy humanity. In this crypt the aptly named Krypt would be playing alongside Darkthrone in the days of Under a Funeral Moon. Krypt however aren't just another Darkthrone worship, they seem to take influence from the old bands, Bathory, Celtic Frost, etc. and work to create their own sound with the old influences. That if nothing else is one thing to commend them for. Certainly one can hear some Darkthrone in here every once in a while, but Krypt's sound is very much genuinely old school.

The production is clear but still raw enough to have that classic black metal sound. The guitars are thick and heavy, but fairly dry, having that ancient sound, like they were carved out of stone and dust. The bass is audible, sometimes pretty heavy, mainly in the slower Celtic Frost sounding passages. Drums are clear, put right on in the mix to be audible but not overwhelming. The drum parts are well performed and never boring. The vocals have a great deal of reverb and create that ghostly evil element that is important in good old school black metal in my opinion.

Overall this is a quality black metal release, that is as good and interesting as anything Tsjuder released, although different, while they specialized in Immortal style cold atmospheres, Krypt is more interested in death worshiping and dark dank dungeon atmospheres resplendent with hate and corpses. Very much in keeping with the original concept of Norwegian Black Metal as crafted by Euronymous and Dead with Mayhem's artistic peak i.e., death worshiping black metal creating soundscapes sometimes with beauty, always with elements of darkness and ugliness.

Nothing groundbreaking, but very good and worth a listen or a purchase.

Wormed - Planisphaerium
Tech so good.
By: Assgrinder
Date: 24 Oct 2010
Rating:

Wormed are possibly one of the best if not THE best bands out these days in the Technical Brutal Death side of things. They manage to mix a blend of heavy that ties into technical awesomely. Their lyrics are out of this world and the music behind the lyrics is wickedly composed. Wormed is definitely going to sit on my top favorites for a long time, and will most likely sit in yours if you give em a try. 5 easy for this band.

I couldn't agree more with Stuken. Also, the bass work in this album is superb as it makes the music sound deep and unique.

Nox - Ixaxaar
Excellent Brutal Death Metal CD
By: tronous32
Date: 9 Oct 2010
Rating:

Without a doubt one of the most punishing extreme metal acts around today, Nox is actually made up of some familiar faces, being comprised of Rob Oorthuis (guitars), Seth v/d Loo (vocals) and Patrick Boleij(bass), formerly of Centurian, the latter two currently known as members of Severe Torture, and newcomer Bob Dussel (drums). Nox is here to rip your guts out with their satanic brand of death that is sure to make you kneel at the altar of the metal gods. That may be a bit of an exaggeration but Nox's full length definitely packs a punch. Ixaxaar obviously takes much of it's influence from the old school death metal scene but in the end they take that sound and sculpt it into their own.

Job For A Cowboy - Genesis
A strong, solid full length debut
By: tronous32
Date: 9 Oct 2010
Rating:

Genesis is phenomenal if you are a fan of JFAC then I highly recomend this album. The way I like to view Genesis in comparison with the Doom ep is; Doom I feel is more a showcase of what this band is like and shows the area of their abilities and doesn't really follow any specific pattern. Genesis for lack of a better word is more musical it has a more guitar solos, and the drums are heavy. The display of drumming on this album will blow your mind. The drumming alone makes this album a must.

Lamb Of God - Sacrament
Another Good Album from Lamb of God
By: tronous32
Date: 9 Oct 2010
Rating:

I have to admit it, I was not used to listening to Lamb of God but this album is pretty good. It's more melodic and even has solos. The vocals are different from the previous albums. I would say this album is more thrash metal than hardcore as from the past albums.
