Destroyer 666 - Defiance
Back with a vengeance!!, |
Destroyer 666 do it again, a hard hitting epic of an album, with some new touches added to their fierce arsenal. This is by far their best effort since Phoenix Rising.

Watain - Lawless Darkness
Powerful and writhing in dark torment |
Let me just state that Watain is not a band for everybody. But then again black metal isn't meant to be. True black metal- as embodied by legendary bands like Mayhem and Darkthrone, and the modern masters Watain- is something holy and divine. It's not Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir pawning their wares at Hot Topic and playing for a bunch of sweaty meatheads at Ozzfest.
Watain have seemingly gotten better with each successive album. It's a tribute to how the band sees themselves as true artists of the dark, refusing to spew it half-hearted albums every 18 months, instead focusing on creating one flawless album every 3 or 4 years. Highlights on Lawless Darkness are "Death's Cold Dark", "Malfeitor", the hypnotizing "Reaping Death" and the majestic 14 minute epic "Waters of Ain".
It's not hard for me to say that "Lawless Darkness" is not only Watain's crowning glory, but also the best new release of 2010 so far. It's also easily earned a place as one of the greatest black metal albums ever recorded.

High On Fire - Death Is This Communion
High on Fire never lets down |
"Death Is This Communion" is nothing new from High on Fire. It does not forge a new direction, it does not reinvent the wheel, it does not outdo past albums...but it doesn't need to. I am pleased to say it is Blessed Black Wings Pt. 2 - equally powerful, equalling thundering and gripping. It slays. Simple.
For those unaware of the HoF sound- they fuse the powerful dirges of Sleep and Sabbath, the rampaging onslaughts of Slayer and stunning guitar heroics from Matt Pike, truly one of the best leads in metal today. For "Death Is This Communion" the band brought in some new flavours to the mix, such as bursts of 12 string guitars and some middle-eastern instruments to give a more international feel. This works very well, especially when juxtaposed with crushing metal, such as with one of the album's highlights "Waste of Tiamat" and the short excerpt "Khanrad's Wall".
This is not to say HoF have branched out and beyond their sound. Having such a unique sound in the first place, it would have been difficult, and potentially ruining to attempt a dramatic shift. The classic HoF tones are there in full glory. Opener "Fury Whip" immediately recalls the raging "Devilution", and the title track's monolithic doom harkens to the bands origins. "Turk" is the standout track for me as it combines everything great about the band, and sees Pike experimenting with a little bit more melody with his vocals.

Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination
Unique Band |
Vocalist is amazing. He's able to pull off some long streaks in his music, and it's obvious that he's never smoked.
Drummer brings a new feel to music and Death Metal in general. Packing a loud beat, with some nice sound of desperation.
Guitarists are all amazing and give the band it's unique gain and distortion.
Bassist is clever, giving us the sounds we've always wanted out of a band like this.
Overall, this band is unique and amazing.

Human Mastication - Grotesque Mastication Of Putrid Innards
One of my favorites! |
Human Mastication may not be the biggest and most popular Brutal Death Metal band out with a record, but these guys really know what they are doing. These guys are Asian. I know what your thinking; "These guys are Asian? Holy shit! They're talented!" With a non-racist further note, I really like how they pulled together and came up with a great album for me to listen too in the car, at work, and hear some requests from you guys. In my personal opinion, Human Mastication stands up next to Cannibal Corpse in my style of music. Brutal thanks \,,/

Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells
Blood in Our Wells |
This is their fourth full-lenght and in my opinion this is the best of all at the moment and also is a small masterpiece of black atmospheric general and in particular Drudkh discography. It's always a pleasure to listening this tribute to the pain and loneliness with a lyrical charge so absolutely brutal. Blood In Our Wells is immersed into a spectacular atmosphere of regret and sadness. This album have variated times, generally very slow and high density make us travel in the harsh and unforgiving winter on the plains of Ukraine, among dark forests of conifers that twist seeking the light of a sun that seems to have forgotten that part of the planet. While we hear the distant sound of traditional music in this country.
Highly recommended. It's Perfect. I rate it 5.0.

Dark Fortress - Eidolon
Eidolon |
This is their fifth full-lenght. Eidolon’ is a Greek concept of an astral double or mirror. The album describes a magic mirror ritual in which the mirror functions as a gateway to another dimension, so it's very interesting to read the lyrical concept and feel how the music express it. I like the headbanging riffs of "Baphomet" & "Edge Of Night" and also the fast melodies of "Cohorror" & "No Longer Human" songs. It's a nice and interesting Album. Recommended. I rate it 4.5.

Dark Fortress - Stab Wounds
Stab Wounds |
This is their third full-length and my favourite Dark Fortress Album. The cover design was done by Travis Smith artist. Excellent melodic fast Black Metal. I like too much the guitar riffs mixed with the depressive lyrics about suicide and hatred. Most of the songs are over 6 minutes but you'll never get bored cause they all are awesome, specially "Rest in Oblivion" & "Stab Wounds" songs. Highly recommended for the Melodic Black Metal fans, i rate it 5.0.

Dark Fortress - Ylem
Ylem |
This is their Sixth full-length album in the nine years since the band’s inception. In this album they added some progressive parts and composed some slow and deep songs evoking a nice dark sound like in "Evenfall" song. It's a pretty good melodic song with a kind of clean vocals, dark ambience and dense riffs.
I rate it 4.5, very good and variated album also a good production. Recommended.
