Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
Album Review |
One of the best albums of 2002. Nile has produced an album that takes what they already did to push the limits of death metal. They blend their new-era Morbid Angel style with even more Egyptian instruments to create an extremely creepy atmosphere that most bands only dream of. Tunes like "Sarcophogus", "Unas Slayer of the Gods", Churning the Mealstrom" and the godlike march of "Hall Of Saurian Entombment" grab you and drag you off to a war like something you only see in "The Mummy"

Myrkskog - Deathmachine

Album Review |

Yet another EMPEROR side project. MYRKSKOG takes up on the same path as ZYKLON, but adds more Death Metal to their sound. In a nutshell, picture EMPEROR with no screams, just roars, add samples and industrial keyboards and a more violent Death-sounding version of Black Metal. In the end, it works for MYRKSKOG just as well as it did for ZYKLON. One extra goodie on this album is the re-mix of their own song, "SYNDROME 9". Evil guitar heavy trance and house with blast beats. You need to hear it to believe it. Yet another side of the boys from EMPEROR that we haven't seen yet. But, that was part of their appeal. They always found a way to stretch the limits of their music.

Mithras - Worlds Beyond The Veil
Album Review |

Intense, is definitely one way of describing this music, mixing the talents of Nile, Morbid Angel, and even a lil' Deicide. These guys are some pretty sick shit, I mean sure, they fuck around on the keyboards alil' here and there, but the riffs are thru the roof. And oh yea, for all you purists out there, taking straight from their influences, the band pull off solos that would make Randy Rhodes' jaw drop. Be sure to check out the instrumentals on this one, 'intense' is the only word worthy of a description.

Malevolent Creation - Will To Kill, The
Album Review |
Malevolent Creation's latest offering is chuggy, brutal, death metal. Some early Sepultura-style riffs, a bit of Nalpalm in the vocals, (wow, you can actually make out some lyrics!) and the obligatory blast beats here and there. There's a major Slayer influence going on in the few solos on the album, (only Malevolent Creation is much closer to actually being in key...ouch). Good stuff indeed, in fact I'd say one of the best, if not the best death metal release of 2002, right up there with Decapitated's "Nihility". Go check it out.

Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness
Album Review |

This is without a doubt one of their best work. Immortal has always been known as an amazing Black Metal band and has dropped some vital albums for a well-round metalhead's collection. Sons of Northern Darkness is one of the best Black Metal albums, if not just Metal, period, I've ever heard. It holds the place as one of the last albums to be recorded and produced by Hypocrisy frontman, Peter Tagtgren's legendary Abyss Studios. What an album to go out with. Frontman/Guitarist Abbath furthermore shows the unreal playing ability that has made him one of metals modern-day Riff Masters.

Gojira - Way Of All Flesh, The
Album Review |

Gojira, (the Japanese spelling of Godzilla) more than live up to their name with this new foray into the metal unknown. With a sound consisting of monumental progessive death metal elements but including indescribable unknown influences and extremes, these guys continue to redifine the genre and push boundries. In short, no one sounds like fucking Gojira.

Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
Album Review |
This is one of the most impressive METAL albums I've heard in quite awhile. Turns out these guys have been around for 10 years, they put out their first album "Terror Incognita" in 2001, and have been evolving in France ever since. In case you're wondering, the songs are in English... not that it matters, the music itself would hook most metalheads.

God Among Insects - World Wide Death
Album Review |
Their "World Wide Death" disc, (which is currently pummeling my ears) is chock full of disgustingly downtuned warp speed riffs, skull crushing breakdowns, and plenty of bowel moving growls. The best though, are the riffs that just groove on here. Not quite as catchy as say Carcass used to be, but the feeling is there.

Entombed - Serpent Saints
Album Review |
Another Entombed album, what will this one bring? Well, if you liked what they've done since Wolverine Blues, you'll be pretty happy, and if you enjoy their death metal past, this one is definately worth a listen. The infamous death metal vocals are there with the usual punk-fueled riffage they've displayed as of late, but there's also a touch of old-school Entombed in here, breakneck speeds, thrash riffs, blast beats...this is no slow album. Mmmm, Entombed are back, and they've brought death metal with them.
