Enthroned - Apocalypse Manifesto, The
Insanity! |
First there was "Towards the Skullthrone of Satan" and "Prophecies of Pagan Fire", Later in Enthroned's Discography there was "Xes Haereticum", first few releases featuring a raw black metal style that Sabathan (lead vocals and bass), set apart from the pack with his small stature and high piched vocals... as well as a huge stage presence. The ladder being the beginning of the end for the black metal midget, with a whole new direction for the band; brutal, no bullshit hatred. Somewhere between these two sounds is what i believe to be their best ever release, The Apacolypse Manifesto. This release still features sabathan as the frontman, and is the first release forshadowing a new direction for the band. Herein lies a brutal, thrashy feel that is at this point new to the Belgian outfit, yet still is unmistakably Enthroned. Sabathan's screeching vocals, new percussion styling that forces you to stand up and take notice, enthroned-style melodic guitars with a thrashy feel, and an overall sound that just cannot, and will not... ever be matched. Amazingly deep feel to the breakdowns, yet not at all straying from the sound that makes enthroned one of the best of all times. 5/5! Thank you Ripperchris for the add!

Moonsorrow - Tulimyrsky EP
Tulimyrsky EP |
Here we have yet another release from these epic viking metal masters. This time, it’s in the form of an EP which contains more material (time wise) than many other typical full-length albums. This album only contains one new song (Tulimyrsky), but being 29.45 minutes long, it can hardly be counted as any old one song.
This EP also contains re-recorded versions of Taistelu Pohjolasta and Hvergelmir, which are tracks from Moonsorrow’s demo days. As expected with re-recorded demo tracks, these are done with better production, but otherwise there's nothing unexpected to them.
“Tulimyrsky” also contains two cover tracks: Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” (from their Ride The Lightning album) and Merciless’s “Back To North” (from their Unbound album). Both these covers have received the full Moonsorrow treatment, where the original versions seem to have their inner viking unleashed upon an unsuspecting audience.
Overall, this is a well done EP, especially the cover of “Back To North”, which is an absolutely incredible track, and easily the best song on this album. This is the exact type of song that suits Moonsorrow’s style, because it simply makes complete sense for an epic band to cover an epic song, it just mixes seamlessly.

This is a great album and i thank god once again for dfm, cuz without dfm, i probably woud never heard of these guys.
Brutal Deathcore from Russia at it's best. Great bree sound, heavy sound, brutal breakdowns and a different lyrical theme for once. Vocals are in russian. Overall good sound and it's 100% worth checking out, get it 4 free on their myspace.
5 Pentagrams.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Maybe Best Opeth Album |
It seems like Opeth has put a step forward with this album. The songs are complex and has beautifull riffs with surprising guitar solos. The drummer has done a distinguishable work in this album. My favourite one is The Grand Conjuration. The extreme vocals are traditional Opeth style. A progress and variation i would expect in the future too.

Vomitory - Primal Massacre
Album Review |
Brutal is one way of putting this record, but other way is by say it sounds like almost every other generic death band out there. It's a shame 'cause these guys can play, but there is nothing original about them. They do have some songs that stand out if you don't mind weeding thru the trash for them. "Demon's Divine", "Condemned By Pride", and "Cursed Revelations" are the songs you need to look for on here.

Vicious Art - Fire Falls And The Waiting Waters
Album Review |
There's a wide range of goodies on here, from blast beats to slow, grindy grooves. It's ugly, it's heavy, and here and there it's actually melodic. And no wonder, the band features former members of Dark Funeral and Jorgen Sandstrom from Entombed/Project Hate/Grave fame. The vocals aren't obnoxious, you can actually make out some words, kinda like Katakylsm meets Entombed. Mmmmm..Swedish death metal.

Vehemence - Helping The World To See
Album Review |
See the problem here and with a lot of Death Metal bands is they don't take enough time to get the mix right. I mean look at Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding" or Deicide's "Once Upon a Cross", here people, some of the best mixes Death has ever seen. Sticking solely to the Swedish style guitar harmonies and style isn't always bad, but leaves little to grow.

Vader - Art Of War, The
Album Review |
Now this, right here...this is death metal. slayer fans, this band should be in your collection. After 15+ years Vader are still pumping out unrelenting riffs, blast beats, the occasional cheesy sample. It's damn good stuff, better than anything I've heard from these guys in a long time actually, even though I swear that's a Sepultura riff in the 3rd track.
