Amongst The Deceit - Tribulations Of Man
AMONGST THE DECEIT-TRIBULATIONS OF MAN

AMONGST THE DECEIT-TRIBULATIONS OF MAN

Born in 2008 Austrian brutal death merchants Amongst The Deceit are here with their debut full length album 'Tribulations Of Man', an eight track platter packed to the brim with riffs galore, myriad solo exhibitions, incessant battery and inhumane vocal incantations.

Influenced quite basically by 'all kinds of brutal metal' the quintet established a solid line up early in their existence with the exception of a drummer; the right sticksman to sit behind the kit proving to be elusive until they finally settled on recording skins beater Tom Sic, credited not as a drummer in the band ranks but more ominously as 'blastmachine'.

Joining the blastmachine in the Amongst the Deceit crew are Steve-rhythm and lead guitars, Johan-rhythm guitars, Martyhn-bass and Thorn-vocals.
Tribulations Of Man' gets itself underway in an innocuous enough fashion with the pleasant one and a half minute instrumental preface 'Inceptum'.
Reminiscent of some of the notable Metallica instrumentals (in their moments of quiescence) this intro segment is a gentle little thing of acoustic guitars, a touch of sonic experimentation and not much more.

The next composition in play 'Inferior Lives' is something entirely different.
Hostile and menacing from the very first second this thing shreds at the eardrums with malevolent claws of DM riffery and a jackhammer of percussion that has drummer Tom Sic living up to his description as blastmachine promptly.

Vocalist Thorn sets off on a grunting, bellowing expedition to give vent to the lyrics, his style maintaining a text book death metal subterranean quality, the rumbling vocal thunder a suitable complement to the chugging guitar muscle and percussive power.

Also sticking to the book of death metal is the predisposition to fill (and sometimes over inflate) the composition with dazzling multiple transitions and an array of solos, sometimes bringing in a throwaway riff for only a brief stay while reverting back to others over and over again.

'Dark Science' bulldozes right down the same path as its predecessor with thuggish brawling guitar passages throttling curved spikes of high end melody.
Growling monstrous vocals issue over some rather excellent tremolo patterns and the blasting machine battery is an unremitting force that seems as if it just wants to lay waste to everything in its way.

Suggestions of Morbid Angel, Deicide and others from the classic American guard of death metal (and some of the European) permeate over the course of the album, essentially first cropping up on 'Inferior Lives' and persisting here in 'Dark Science' and beyond.

Amongst The Deceit may refer to themselves as primarily death metal with references to black metal also but fundamentally to me they are straight down the line brutal death metal pretty much to the exclusion of all other genres.

Some screaming, shrieking voice types synonymous with the BM field enter fleetingly during this composition but as a general rule of thumb the Austrians are solely reliant on the mouth full of cemetery soil delivery.

As the album progresses it does so in a method similar to a runaway train loaded with explosives; it is big, mercurial, immensely heavy and primed to detonate.

Dawn Of The Martyr', 'Infernal D.N.A', 'Dead With Open Eyes', they come thick and fast, borne on relentless brute drumming, torrents of riffing and unearthly vocals (the majority being that cavernous growl from the centre of hell with a couple of detours into the shriek technique).

Flurries of soloing and lead breaks reside in all of these as do hordes and hordes of endless transitions, again either gnawing a particular riff into broken bone fragments or tossing it aside like a disposable item that has served its purpose.

At the tail end of 'Infernal D.N.A' the brutality ebbs away, superseded by atmospheric soundscapes and little else and the beginning of 'Dead With Open Eyes' features some nice gales of cold tremolo ice behind a fusillade of battery but elsewhere it is bludgeoning business as usual.

A few negatives rear their head as Amongst The Deceit go about their way of obliterating all and sundry under a deafening wall of heavy metal thunder.

Firstly, bass seems like a secondary and underused instrument, virtually an afterthought that merely doesn't get enough spotlight time or is just completely shut otu by the crushing power of the twin guitars and punishing drums.

It isn't until the very last track 'The Sadistic Impulse' that the bass becomes really audible, actually pushing right to the very fore of that number around one minute twenty but the presence of the instrument as a strong one is an all too rare occurrence.

Secondly, the blasting fury of the drums themselves whilst monstrous, massively heavy and utterly unrelenting are not in any way diverse.

Keeping up an incessant jackhammering percussive thunder right through seven tracks (discounting the drumless intro) of an average length of four and a half minutes doesn't allow for much variety or change when perhaps it could have been factored in.

The guitars may blitz through so many different transitions with utmost technicality that ones head spins but in pulverizing everything with blastmachine surging the drums do not, which may draw yawns from those who would like a little less of one and a little more of the other.

'Tribulations Of Man' is an enormously brutal album, that cannot be disputed and it is full of impressive technical proficiency in terms of guitar and its monster vocal assaults should appeal to fans of that approach as should the bulldozer drums.

However I wouldn't define it as an instant classic and there are still many many kings of both brutality and technicality Amongst The Deceit would have to overthrow before they get the chance to contest the throne.

Akercocke - Choronzon
One of the few true art bands...
By: Dark
Date: 11 Nov 2011
Rating:

Let me start by saying this is one of the few bands i listen to that i dont judge based on drums. The way this band flows between brootal and clean vocals is smooth, and another one of the good things is how alot of the songs just have a literal beauty to them. You realizes this randomly in the songs as the album progresses.

This band has it all, brutal DM and nice melodic parts to it and even some doomy. I chose to review this album becuase it was my first and IMO their best. After my first time listening it shook me up, becuase of the satanic noises, starts and stops, hard and soft parts. Their songs are all over the place, and one of the more important Progressive DM bands on this station.

Their older albums are good but Akercocke at that time didnt polish their sound, as they went the really did get better. If you are more into constant thrasing of brutal vocals go along with their older albums. But if you have ADD and like change contsant thru each song listen to their new albums.

Vader - Welcome To The Morbid Reich
great album!

This has got to be one of the best albums I have purchased all year!

You get catchy death metal riffing along with soaring solos and punishing vocals. The drums and guitars create great rhthymic structures within each of the songs to create a overall good album for headnodding and just drifting off and enjoying. The entire album from front-to-back stands out to the point to where the album barely gets dull for entire album listening.

Overall, I give this a 10/10.

Cephalotripsy - Uterovaginal Insertion Of Extirpated Anomalies
Excellent brutal slammind death masterpiece

This album contains every element, that i would expect from such a great band. Guttural vocals, catchy tunes that instantly make you wish to be in a mosh pit, good song intros, intense non-stop violence coming through the speakers, great riffs.

I am hooked on this album for a few months now and i can hardly wait for the new album, which is in the making now.

This is a must for the fans of brutal death metal. Similar bands are: Abominable putridity, Infernal revulsion, Vulvectomy, Condemned, Devourment.

Korpiklaani - Tales Along This Road
Spring Dance
By: ARny
Date: 17 Oct 2011
Rating:

The most played song on this one is "Happy Little Boozer", which is ofc an awesome song, but what about the others? I decided to check out the rest of this album and here are my thoughts:
First, i kinda like the cover and the name of the album. A cold, snowy road in the forest and a drunk dude who looks like "Cmon, drink a beer." The cover sums it up: You're in for a folkish ride of awesomness. This album is atmospheric & every track just spreads happiness and carelessness. It makes you feel like: "Who care's it's monday, have a drink!" The overall sound is good, I really like the sound of the violin and the accordion on this one, fits perfect to the mood.
Listen to "Rise", "Midsummer Night" or "Spring Dance" for once and you'll know what I mean. Totally recommend it to the folks here.

5 Pentagrams ;)

Truppensturm - Salute To The Iron Emperors
WAR-style BM \m/
By: stuka_kommandant
Date: 13 Oct 2011
Rating:

Truppensturm is a BM band from Germany, formerly called Sturmtruppen (1996-2006).
The reason of the name-change was that there is another Sturmtruppen (which is a NS band).
Truppensturm is BM in the Blasphemy vein. This means that the songs are all completely forward moving, with an incredible level of momentum and force driving every song.
O.k. the production is a bit dump, imo, but it's the one i'm expecting for an album of this genre!
Now, seriously, if you're into wars, this is the thing you want to listen to:
12 raging tracks of blackened death war metal, - imagine [early] Incantation meets Marduk!
Fans of brutal black/death metal though will be more than happy with this album...
THIS is true war metal! - *CHEERZ!!!*\m/

Taake - Noregs Vaapen
Noregs Vaapen

3 years have passed since 2008 Taake "Taake" Album, so here we have now their 5th full-lenght (under Dark Essence Records) till this moment.
I have to quote there's no band, even in Norway, which sounds the same than Taake's has been playing. They are unique and that's why this band is so important. Some time ago, I watched an interview where Hoest said Taake was created just for Norwegian people. Their lyrics are very patriotic and are all in Norwegian (booklet written always in Runes), inspired by their city (Bergen) and the surrounding athmosphere there.
Back to the album, "Noregs Vaapen" which means "Norwegian Weapon" has a very nice and special guests like Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone), Athila Csihar (Mayhem) y Demonaz (Immortal, Demonaz) and also incorporates new elements like Mellotron (songs 1 & 5), Banjo (song 5) and Mandolin (song 6). This Album has quite a distinguished sound compared to Taake’s previous releases cause the production and sound in general is softer, thing that shows how Hoest wanted to make a perfect blend between the old Black Metal band's style and a some new waves, without changing on a radical way. There's no boring song here, since the first song you can listen the characteristic Taake's sound. All songs have a lot of variety on tempo, soloing, chorus, interludes and the complete atmosphere, which is always fascinating. Another new thing on this Album is that features some 70s or 80s hard rock style of guitar work at times. There are a few guitar riffs and solos here which definitely change the tone of the music here.

This is by far a very good Album, also Taake's one of the best representative Black Metal Bands nowadays.
I rate this Album 5/5. Highly recommended.

Nokturnal Mortum - Voice Of Steel, The
The Voice Of Steel
By: Azdragar
Date: 8 Oct 2011
Rating:

This is in my opinion their best Album ever made.
As always, patriotic Ukranian feellings blended with an exquisite Black Metal sound, this time accompanied with some kinda blues/jazz interludes and great soloing, mainly in Valkyrie and White Tower. These two songs are an incredible masterpiece metal songs. They both are long but you can never get bored of the perfect structure and melodies on each one. You can feel you're listening to the old Nokturnal Mortum Black Metal sound, with harsh vocals and fast melodies and then, smoothly, the sound goes into a very nice and relaxing mixture of Folk Symphonic characteristic elements with very nice blues/jazz interludes.

I rate this Album 5/5. Highly recommended.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Good...
By: Nisanthro
Date: 4 Oct 2011
Rating:

...but not excellent as their first album or the subsequent EP. I mean the band certainly knows how to use their instruments, but the riffs are somehow simplified compared to the previous releases, the orchestration often feels kind of unnecessary and there's no real passion in the songs.
This band knows how to be excellent, but it looks like they're slowly forgetting it... So far each new release was slightly worse than the previous one. I really hope it doesn't stay that way.
