Marduk - Serpent Sermon
|
Needs must when the devil drives |
|
Bands need money to live. For those bands with a small but loyal following this means releasing an album every three years, then touring your ass off to promote it. And coming into the studio, shrugging your shoulders and admitting you don't have any real ideas isn't an option.
Record companies have needs too. They need (evidently) to master all their releases in such a way that all the human ear hears is a kind of irritating white noise. If you're still in any doubt about this, google "loudness wars".
So what we have is an album that's virtually unlistenable, there might be some good songs in there but it's impossible to tell. My overall impression though is of an album that doesn't really say, or do anything new. I would even say to the Burzum haters, compare the last Burzum album to this, now which do you prefer?
I give this...hmm...three stars, but mostly out of respect to Marduk's long service to Black Metal.

Borknagar - Urd

Considering their Black/Pagan Metal roots, this might be considered a bit too poppy by some. But hey, that's what you get from Nuclear Blast. Stupid big label scum.

Melancholy Pessimism - Inconsistent World
|
Probably the best Melancholy Pessimism album |
|
A very underrated album in my opinion, totally punishing sound, very great guitar riffs and awesome vocals. What more could you ask for?

Enslaved - Eld

Enslaved - Eld. |
|
Eld means "fire" in Norwegian and this term could be easily replaced with something like: "Stolt" (pride).
Because that feeling is what i hear on this album.
The album starts with a beautiful intro which blends into the best song of this album: the 13 min long epic "793 Slaget om Lindisfarne".
The vocals of Grutle Kjellson are clean and strong in this song and conbines, when doing the aggressive vocals, expression and knowing when to use which different style througout the album.
The music is aggressive but the sound is not that agressive in particular. It is pretty clear sounding and contributes to the differences between Black metal and Viking metal.
Ivar Bjornson is playing some strong riffing and does not lose himself in overdoing guitar parts. Simple and sometimes even bizzare but effective.
It sounds strange for guitar player, but the real hero on this album is in my personal view the drummer! A very distictive sound and style. Some say it is that he is not playing tight, but, even when he is not tight, he is the guy who sets this album apart from all other albums of Enslaved.

Avulsed - Stabwound Orgasm

Stimulating the pleasure centre |
|
This album is kind of my benchmark for Brutal Death Metal. It has a wonderful rich, deep sound with chugging guitars and impenetrable blobby vocals. No pig squeals here. Splendid song titles, silly lyrics for those who like to read them.
