“Dark Medieval Times”, the debut album by Satyricon, was released back in the year 1994, during the height of the second wave of black metal.
Overall this is a more atmospheric release compared to most of the other releases by Satyricon’s black metal counterparts of the time, especially with their rather frequent use of medieval folk music throughout the album, but that only serves to enhance the atmosphere of the music. However, this album is still definitely black metal as it should be: intense, cold, varied, uncompromising and dark.
This band and album doesn’t get quite as much recognition compared to the other Norwegian black metal bands that were also active at the time (Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor etc...), but it’s just as good as anything released by the previously mentioned bands. “Dark Medieval Times” definitely proves that Satyricon belongs amongst Norway’s best, and should be considered one of the key albums that helped to define the great genre of black metal.
If you like black metal you’ll like this, simple as that.
