Odium - The Sad Realm Of The Stars

Odium? Who are they? That is a phrase heard all too often when they are mentioned but this Norwegian black metal has somehow slipped under most people's radar.

They formed in 1994 and play symphonic black metal along the same lines as Limbonic Art and Emperor which is really not surprising given that they are on Samoth of Emperor record label which also happens to be Limbonic Art's label too.

The Sad Realm Of The Stars was released in 1998 after many delays which might explain why the band never got much attention. However this album is an absolute gem the guitars create great melodies and atmosphere throughout and the drums range from all out blast beats to some slower and mid tempo pieces but what really makes this album stand out is the keyboard work. The keyboards give off a very spacey atmosphere which is quite different from most other bands. The ideal place to listen to this album would be in a snow covered forest while looking at the stars because that is certainly the atmosphere this album gives me when I listen to it.

The band is currently on hold with members going on to play in Emperor, Zyklon and currently Myrkskog.

The cover art is done by Morfeus of Limbonic Art

Standout songs:
